The award-winning comedian Trevor Noah will be hosting “LOL: Last One Laughing,” a six-part stand-up comedy competition series on Amazon Prime Video. The show is set to release in early 2024 and will be Prime Video’s first South African original. In the series, 10 South African comedians will compete to see who can maintain a straight face while also trying to make their opponent laugh.

The comedians will be given a list of challenges and scenarios in which they must maintain a stoic expression. The “Last One Laughing” at the end of each episode will take home a cash prize of 1 million Rand.

Trevor Noah, who will host the show, said he was thrilled to be back home and to have the chance to work with other home-grown comedy stars on a show that entertains and gives back to the South African production and charity communities.

Ned Mitchell, head of Africa and Middle East Originals at Amazon, said that the show would introduce audiences to some of the best local comedic talent and was a way of investing in and elevating the very best of South Africa for audiences both locally and around the world.

The show is an adaptation of a franchise produced in more than 20 territories, with celebrity hosts including Jay Baruchel (Canada), Eugenio Derbez (Mexico), Fedez (Italy), Michael “Bully” Herbig (Germany), and Rebel Wilson (Australia). South Africa’s Rapid Blue is producing the show in partnership with Noah’s Day Zero Productions. The contestants will compete for a grand prize of R1 million, which will go to the winner’s South African charity of choice.
