South African rapper AKA, real name Kiernan Forbes, was shot dead on the evening of Friday 10th February 2023 in Durban, according to multiple sources. The 35-year-old artist was one of the most well-regarded musicians in South Africa’s hip-hop scene, known for hit songs including “Fela in Versace” and “All Eyes on Me.”

The passing of AKA was confirmed in a statement by his parents, Tony and Lynn Forbes. The statement read, “It is with extreme sadness that we acknowledge the passing of our beloved son, and confirm his untimely and tragic passing on the evening of February 10, 2023. We are awaiting further details from Durban police.”

Police sources in Durban have reportedly said that the rapper was shot dead in a drive-by shooting. A person believed to be AKA’s bodyguard was also wounded in the incident. Another individual, believed to be a close friend of the rapper, was also reported to have been killed. According to the South African Times, AKA was standing outside a popular restaurant when he was fatally shot.

Paramedics who responded to the scene described total chaos, with two men in their late 30s having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Sadly, AKA was declared dead at the scene, showing no signs of life. The motive for the shooting remains unknown.

AKA had taken to social media on the day of his death, posting about his upcoming album “Mass Country,” set for release later this month. His death has caused a significant outpouring of grief from fans and fellow musicians alike, including Da Les, who tweeted about the shooting.

AKA was a father to his daughter Kairo and was beloved by many, not just for his music, but also for his warm and loving character. His parents wrote in their statement, “To us, Kiernan Jarryd Forbes was a son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend, most importantly, father to his beloved daughter Kairo. To many, he was AKA, Supa Mega, Bhova and the many other names of affection his legion of fans called him by. Our son was loved and gave love in return.”

This is a developing story and more information is expected to become available in the coming days.
