Nigerian music artist, Tems, and Barbadian singer, Rihanna, have been nominated for an Oscar award in the ‘best original song’ category for their work on the soundtrack of the Marvel blockbuster film ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’. The song, titled “Lift Me Up”, was written by Tems, Rihanna, Ryan Coogler, and Oscar winner Ludwig Göransson.
The nominees were announced on January 24th, at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills. “Lift Me Up” will be competing against songs such as “Hold My Hand” by Lady Gaga for Top Gun: Maverick, “Applause” by Diane Warren from Tell It Like a Woman, and “Naatu Naatu” from the Indian blockbuster movie RRR.
The song has seen great success on streaming charts since its release on October 28, 2022, topping the charts in countries such as South Africa, Switzerland, and Belgium. It also made it onto the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart. Although both Tems and Rihanna have received much recognition in their respective crafts through multiple prestigious awards and nominations, this is their first Oscar nomination.
The winners will be announced at the 95th Academy Awards, which will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California on March 12th.
